Chapter Ten

“We are going to have to try to pull the tree downwards towards his feet. I think.” I explain to Gabe. Pacing around, like he was doing earlier, was helping the thought path along but I cringe at the words coming out of me. “Looking at how the wood is lodged, I think if we pushed it that way, it's going to hurt like a bitch, but we would essentially be just pulling the wood out the way it came.”

“Like a splinter, a seriously fucking big splinter.” Alec’s voice is weak but wry as he tries to add a little hilarity into the situation.

“Next year we are buying a goddamn tree like everyone else!” I yell at him, not liking this idea in the least. “Just get it over with, I don't know how long I will be able to hold my owl off.” I don't miss the waiver in his voice.

Gabe makes his way over to the base of the tree and grabs the trunk, digging his feet in and braced to pull as I make my way to the top of the tree. There isn't much to grab, as its mainly those stupid ass tiny branches, but I am eventually able to find a nicely sized branch near the top. Grabbing onto that bitch, I try to imagine it as a bobsled and I'm in the Olympics.

“One...Two...Three!” Gabe counts down in a near whisper. At the word three, I explode forward. Shoving the branch as hard as I can, I can feel the moment that the tree is free of Alec’s body.

One, because the branch in my hands snaps free and I end up with my face in the goddamn snow. Again.

Two, because the exact moment Gabe had pulled and I pushed, the blood curdling scream that had escaped Alec’s throat had quickly changed to the screech of a large ass bird in serious pain.

White feathers spattered with red blood exploded from underneath the tree, screaming its fury to the sky. Beating his large wings, the owl begins to circle overhead as blood dots the snow around us from the still bleeding leg.

We had to get him down and check on the wound, there could be a chance that it would cause more damage to him. The way the owl is glaring and circling makes me worry that he is more likely to dive for our faces, razor sharp talons first.

“Alec you son of bitch! Get down here before you hurt yourself even more!” Gabe yells behind me at the obstinate bird.

The owl’s shrill screech sounds more like a “fuck off” than anything else and it makes me giggle at the stubbornness. The owl’s eyes lock onto my face at the sound before diving towards Gabe and I, but he doesn't touch either of us. Turning slightly when he nears us, it zips between Gabe and I like a rocket, forcing Gabe to jump back or collide with the large bird.

The circling act is back but his eyes have moved from me and are now trained on Gabe.
